For four years I photographed the Apolônias do Bem project, an initiative conceived by the Brazilian NGO Apolonias which provides dental care to women who have suffered domestic violence. I shot portraits of these women before and after their treatment, with their smiles restored. It was heart-breaking to hear their sad stories but also very exciting to help rebuild their self-esteem through these images after their recovery.
